about

Has your life turned out exactly as you planned? Or have a few things gone wrong? Well, 'Where are the Lifeboats?', the latest song from Kildare indie-folk artist Peco, is about that very thing.

The lyrics are like a collection of short stories, where each character’s life has not turned out as planned, and there are no lifeboats coming to save them! Despite the weighty topic the song is delivered with a certain gallows humour and slacker rock swagger.

Peco's folk, americana and classic indie-rock influences are all evident in this bitter sweet, yet strangely uplifting song.

In Peco's words:
"I wrote the song back in the pandemic during Lockdown One. It seems like a lifetime ago now but there was a real sense of unease and powerlessness around that time. We were reminded how little control we have over our lives at times when the forces of fate flex their muscles. So, even though the song is not specifically about time, that atmosphere permeates the heart of it. But I think people can be remarkably resilient and adaptive. So even though the words are about one thing, the music is quite uplifting. I've always liked that juxtaposition. Bob Dylan was a master of that."

‘Where are the Lifeboats?’ is from Peco's forthcoming album 'Miniature Leaps of Faith' due for release this summer.

lyrics

Lately everybody wants to talk about the weather
It’s true a little sun would help alleviate the pressure
But I feel like a breeze would blow me over like a feather
So I turn my collar up and trust that nothing lasts forever

Sarah’s got back out there but not looking for a saviour
Ten years in a marriage but got out on good behaviour
Jerry was her husband, he blamed her for his failures
He’s finally seeing clearly since she said I’ll see you later

CHORUS
(And they said) Where are the lifeboats?
Where are the lifeboats?
Where are the lifeboats, I can’t see em…
Where are the high hopes?
Where are the high hopes?
Where are the high hopes and carpe diem’s

Mike is a musician, it’s all give and no return
A life spent building bridges now he’ll watch while they all burn
He ain’t no new age Nero, just got nothing left to learn
Of how to get screwed over when business is concerned

Arthur is a martyr for the meetings and the mileage
Been talking about starting his own company since college
But the time was never right, now there’s no comfort in the knowledge
That you’ll never have the time if you don’t have the courage

(And they said) Where are the lifeboats?
Where are the lifeboats?
Where are the lifeboats, when you need em
Where are the footnotes
Where are the footnotes
They put all the footnotes in a museum

Been having trouble reading, I’m socially dislexic
I can’t read people’s minds, just ask any of my exes
I try to read their faces but I always stand corrected
I try to read between the lines but the lines don’t have a metric

(And I said) Where are the lifeboats?
Where are the lifeboats?
Where are the lifeboats, I can’t see em…
I’m on the East Coast
I’m on the East Coast
Waiting for my go in the colosseum
